Presenting Mr. Charles Awanda

One summer day I was walking to the Y in my soccer attire when this guy came running up to me. "Do you play football?" he asked eagerly. "Yes" I replied.
"Where can I play?" he asked.
I pointed to the YMCA right behind me and invited Charles to join us on a Sunday. Charles, like many soccer mongrels in NY, had been deprived of his football fix as he didn't know where he could play. We exchanged numbers. I lost his number, but a few weeks later he showed up and he's been coming ever since. Charles hails from Cameroon.

Papa's Place

A message from Alfie: I'd like to thank all you guys for showing up tonight!

It was a pleasure meeting Kai's and Lee's girlfriends respectively. Papa came back nice and ashy from Africa; Amos nice and red from his cross country tour; Yago and his new tales from the wonder-wild world of unemployment; Tesfa and his pecking at his food like a fawn near a stream in Bear Mountain. Tyrone (eyes nice and big) mumbling to himself, "Debe....stay debe (lamb dish)," before he punctures it with his fork; John with his freshly twisted locks and tie with sneakers (fresh liberal white man look, with a wild look in his eye for bloody revolution); Charles (new addition to the group) with a the look of bewilderment at John, guessing "hmmm....how does he get his hair likethat?"; Dan - constant gansta lean as he ploughs down the chicken dish, with Ben next to him....watching his wallet as he is sandwiched between Dan and Tyrone...And let's not forget Rahsaan......mama (wife) calls and he scampers like bambi!!!

I must say I had a great time! Thank you guys for your friendship,authenticity, sincerity, comradeship, and above all mutual love and respect.

This is just to say thank you to Alfie for ordering those great t-shirts and lugging them to the Y, Fort Apache, Little Kabul, his Momma's house, your girlfriend's house, on the train, etc. They look great in black and orange.

Hello football fanatics. Welcome to our blog. With the various photographs we've taken over the months, our opinions and diverse international backgrounds, I think we could make this a great blog. We could comment on our weekly scrimmage at the Y; Alfie's (or anyone else's) line of the day, e.g. "Hi, I'd like to order some defense." We could post all kinds of stuff; Why do our nets sag? Are Elias and Alfie in love? Has Sweet Leche joined a cult in Tokyo? Who accidentally drank my Gatorade? Why weren't Tess' feet happy last week? Why does Anday always pretend to rub the ball before he leaves you in the dust? Was Pedram deported? Should I get me some Moses sandals? These are a few of the topics and questions that keep me up at night. I think this should be the forum for all things football that unite us soccer mongrels.
